A Favorite Thing

We are just about 5 days, 8 hours and 43 minutes away from the opening of #7 Virginia Tech's football season in Atlanta against #5 Alabama (but who's counting...).

I. can't. wait.

This is what I'll be occupied with for the next several months.2009 Virginia Tech football schedule from hokiesports.com
Plus, I love this man, ESPN college football analyst, Kirk Herbstreit.

If he came to the door and asked me to go with him, well, I may have to rename by blog to TheNewMrsHerbstreit.blogspot.com.

If you think I'm joking, check out this picture of me carrying a sign that I got on ESPN Gameday in Blacksburg that said, Herbie Be My Lovebug.

Flashback Friday (part 30) - The Funnel Game

New people who hang around our family always go through somewhat of an initiation. It's especially fun when the newbies are on the gullible side.

In August 2001 at my parents' lake house in Bumpass, Va., our tubing friends Katie and Eric came to visit us from Charlottesville.

My Dad likes to challenge folks to The Funnel Game.

The premise is to place a medium sized funnel in the waistband of your pants, tilt your head back while balancing a quarter and try to drop it forward into the funnel without using your hands. The Funnel Game - practical jokeTo start, you have a few people try it to show how easy it is to do.

Then you have the new person do it a few times successfully so they gain a sense of confidence. If necessary, you can up the ante a little and have the victim person stand on one leg and do it.

After a few attempts, you have the person balance the quarter for five seconds and count it down before dropping the quarter.

Then it happens - - a nearby person, in this case my Dad, pours cold beer down the funnel. It usually takes less than five seconds for the victim to realize they have a cold fluid running down their crotch.
The Funnel Game Insert insane amount of laughter and The Funnel Game is over!

A Favorite Thing

I know I showed two magnets on my main fridge last time but this is a magnet on a different fridge in our house.

Located in our "party room" and just above the two beer tap handles on Betty, the kegerator, this magnet hangs. Favorite Thing - Wino Crossing magnetI like the irony of it being above the beer when it's referencing wine.

Who hasn't felt like this on some days?

Spending the Night at The Beach

This past Saturday with our dogs safely staying with The Neighbors at their lake house, we drove 90 minutes south to Nags Head, NC in the Outer Banks (OBX). We met up with Kim and her family plus a few other couples.

Hurricane Bill (not so much) was somewhere in the Atlantic and making waves. The red flags were up and swimming was banned. The penalty for swimming was either paying $250 or dying. Your choice.
Kitty Hawk, NC - Hurricane Bill wavesSince the kids couldn't swim in the ocean, we headed back to the motel to get in the pool.

Dinner was spent on the beach road at The Black Pelican. We were there before Kim's 40th birthday back in March. Kim and Deb - Kitty Hawk, NC

It was a fun weekend in the OBX. It makes me miss our week-long vacation we had there in June.

(Side note: I'll have the Flashback Friday Mr. Linky working this week so please come back and play along. If you would like a reminder, follow me on twitter or sign up to follow this blog.)

Dog Gone Cute

The Neighbors took our dogs to their lake house in North Carolina for a long weekend while we spent a night in the Outer Banks with our friends.

They came home exhausted after running up and down the big hill between the house and the water and swimming and jumping off the dock. Sandy and Moe at the lakeSydney isn't pictured because apparantly after day two, she didn't want to run down to the dock too often.

Caroline found a trusty babysitter for Ethan in Sandy.Sandy babysitting Baby Ethan at the lakeThey had a good weekend but like us, were glad to be home.

Flashback Friday (part 29) - Beer-decathalon

Before Tim and I got married in Jamaica, we lived with The Neighbors in what was universally referred to as The Frat House for two months as we were transitioning between our condo and our new house.

As I have referenced before as Mens' Bowling Night, the household consisted of Tim and I, Caroline and Chris, Eddie his wife Kat and Steve and four dogs. Everyone in the previous sentence has either been in the military or still is except for me, Kat and the dogs.Beer-decathalon with the Neighbors

There were a lot of shennanigans going on in the house because of our ages and lack of responsibility besides the dogs. No one had kids yet. Besides Steve, everyone got married in 2003.

Someone came up with the idea the year before to have a Beer-decathalon. A series of 10 games that we all made up and agreed on before starting to see who could win. Most of them did involve drinking beer but some were just for fun.

Steve took the competition very seriously and dressed for success. He heckled the dogs before starting.

Some events included a HORSE in basketball, chug a beer through a straw, bobbing for lemons out of the hot tub, a dice game, cards and a few other random things.

It was great fun and we haven't done it since.

Now it's your turn. Find an old picture and share a story about it or why you wanted to share it now. Flashback Friday has no real rules other than to have fun. What I Learned (so far) from My Toddler

Deb and Troy - June 2009 in Corolla, NC (OBX)
-->Anything will be done without complaint if chocolate is promised at the end.

-->Having a short attention span is wonderful when it goes from a skinned knee and tears to watching Dora.

-->No matter how small the task, independence and confidence grows after doing anything alone and quickly followed by "I did it!"

--> The beach is indeed a sandbox first and not a place to play in the ocean.
-->Water is most fun when on the outside of the body and not inside.

-->Making a suggestion of something fun to do or eat better happen Right Now or you're just lying; there is no future time.

-->The funniest things to toddlers are usually giving them the unexpected - singing the wrong lyrics to a tune they know, walking funny or just being silly in general.

-->Saying my name once is not as effective as "Mama, Mama, Mama, MAMA!" to get my attention.

This post was inspired from MamaKatsLosinIt.

Flashback Friday - Join the Party!

Flashback Friday with WebSavyMom.com
As I have mentioned before, I take A LOT of pictures and have done so for the last nine years. Thankfully, I anticipated back in 2000 when I had my first digital camera that this may be the case and quasi-carefully labeled all of my pictures by event/date into folders and subfolders.

Depending on which friend or family member is visiting, I pull up some of the old folders and we browse through the pictures. Then I tell a Extremely Funny story relating to the photos and wish it had happened recently so I could post it on the blog.

Flashback Fridays was born.

To help you all slingshot yourselves into the weekend, please join me weekly and share your own old pictures and a story to accompany. If you're not much of a storyteller, just tell us why you like the picture(s) and why.

Be sure to come back on Friday and add your link for others to view as well.

Here is the button if you want to grab it for your site.

A Favorite Thing

Tim brought home these two magnets a few years ago. From a distance, they look very June Cleaver-like til you read the talking bubbles.

Flashback Friday (part 28) - What Would Jimmy Buffet Do?

In August 2006, two men and two women set out on a road trip from Virginia Beach to Northern Virginia to see Jimmy Buffett in concert.

Tailgating before Jimmy Buffett in 2006My brother Mike was an experienced Jimmy Buffett concert-goer but it was the first time for Tim, Caroline and myself. Tailgating before Jimmy Buffett in 2006

It was memorable for several reasons.

  1. Caroline and I were pregnant.

  2. It was 103F in the shade without heat index.

  3. We brought our own port-a-potty.

  4. Tim and Mike thought the best way to stay hydrated was to keep drinking.

  5. Tim said at least 756 times, "there are a lot of drunk people here."

  6. I almost beat my husband 756 times for saying "there are a lot of drunk people here."Tailgating before Jimmy Buffett in 2006
Caroline and I did make up for it last year when we went back again for the concert and I got to do the ice luge among other things. Tailgating before Jimmy Buffett in 2006

Here is explanation of Flashback Friday and other FF posts.

***For the first time, I'm testing the waters to see if anyone else would like to participate in Flashback Friday with me. Once you post, please come back and add your link to the specific entry below. I'm not sure how popular this idea will be so it's worth a shot.***

The Usual Suspects

On Saturday night The Usual Suspects came over for dinner off the grill; The Neighbors, my sister and her two kids and my brother and his wife.

Since they're always never featured on this blog, here are a few of my better pictures from the night.

Besides having a 10-day old baby and two little girls under 4, Caroline brought figs off the tree in her yard wrapped in prosciutto.

Troy is ready for football season. He picked up his football before everyone arrived, walked into his room and told me he wanted to wear his jersey. I'm there buddy; I'm there.
